First though, an explanation of how it came about in the first place, as there’s a valuable lesson in there…somewhere.
As someone who writes email and copy for people, I know the value of a good nurturing email sequence.
Someone subscribes to your list, gets your lead magnet and then you warm them up with a sequence of emails that help:
- help build the “know, like and trust” factor,
- deliver them even more value, and
- create an environment where they not only enjoy seeing your name appear in their inbox, but they’re not totally averse to the idea of giving you money in the future.
Autoresponders work.
However…
When I work with business owners, I’ve noticed that they’re great at creating a lead magnet and setting up the email sequence, but then they go and spoil it all, by doing saying something stupid, like…
NOTHING.
(Donate $10 to the Pavlovian Research fund if you said, “I love you”)
After doing all the hard work, they never email their list again.
They let their perfect clients go from being a warm, happy prospect – a friend who’s delighted to be in your world to a freezing cold, “who the heck is that? I don’t remember signing up for this” stranger who is one step away from clicking the dreaded “unsubscribe” button.
A lead magnet and email sequence can set your business on fire, so it’s hotter than Pamela Anderson in the 1990s, eating chilli in the Sahara Desert in July, but…
…even the biggest fires need stoking once in a while.
(This simile was brought to you by the “How to Write Silly Similes” training in the GDOA)
The other problem with a lead magnet is – what’s to stop people grabbing your PDF and immediately unsubscribing?
If only there was a way to create a freebie that people could have immediate access to AND also be a reason for them to stick around in the future…
What if you could create an ever-expanding resource of tools, PDFs and pieces of training that your audience would find useful?
And what if this ever-expanding resource was interactive – so they could request training – training that would solve THEIR problems and ease THEIR worries?
If you could create that, they’d actually WANT to stay on your list, whether it’s because they’re curious about what will be next, or because they know that, if they have a problem, the answer is on its way!
Hence the “GOOGLE DRIVE OF AWESOMENESS!!!!”
(You’re right, I have built this up a tad too much, but you get the idea)
The reason I created the GDOA!!!! is because one of my goals for 2020 is to build an email list of 1,000 people.
Not just any people, but 1,000 true fans.
If I can get 1,000 true fans – business folk who want to:
- use humour and comedy in their work to earn more money,
- improve their copywriting so they sell more,
- stand out from the competition so the customer has a reason to choose them,
- enjoy their work more.
…those kinds of people.
If I could get me 1,000 of those fabulous folk…I’d be happy.
The “GDOA!!!!” is my tool for doing that.
No Google ads…No posting like a beast in FB groups…No more adverts on the back of pizza menus…
Just work at creating something that 1,000 people look at and think:
“Man, this IS pretty awesome. I’m going to stick around and pay attention! Not only that, I’m going to share it on all my social media platforms and tell everyone at my ‘Campanology for beginners’ class!”
That’s my plan anyway. I have no idea if it’s a good one or not.
(I guess I’ll find out in 333 days)
If you haven’t already, do have a look inside the GDOA!!!.
If you notice any problems, let me know.
At the moment, it’s a newborn – it’s small and fragile and farting uncontrollably, but I’m hoping it’ll grow into something worthy of its name.
Oh, and I meant what I said about suggestions. The GDOA!!!! will be even more useful if you let me know what you’re struggling with.
That’s all for now. Have a look and let me know what you think.
