“If you only needed the truth, people would just read the paper and howl” – Jerry Seinfeld.
Think of your favourite stand up comedian. Now think of some of their best jokes.
Now, get off the floor and stop laughing.
I’ll bet that, for every joke, there’s a fundamental truth behind it.
…It might be Peter Kay talking about getting your head stuck in a railing.
…Or Richard Prior talking about heart attacks.
Show me a joke and I’ll – probably – show you a truth.
The easiest way to do this is to pick and truth and try to find a new angle on it.
If you want to use humour when marketing your business, your message, product, market or USP can be your truth.
Start with a truth and play around, looking for new perspectives. See what you can come up with. Don’t be too hard on yourself with this. The key is to relax and see what you can come up with.
Don’t zap all the fun out of this by adding goals, targets and deadlines.
Get your truth and riff on it a while.
Let me know what you come up with (seriously… do!).
