Want to Start Writing Jokes, but don’t Know Where to Start?

Want to start writing jokes, but don’t know where to start?

Puns.

DON’T GROAN AT ME!!!

Puns are the best place to start. They are the simplest form of joke there is.

It’s just SETUP and PUNCHLINE.

That’s it.

Find words with more than one meaning and get cracking with those.

Despite their simplicity, there’s still the elements of flow and rhythm to contend with, so even just working with puns, you’ll start to get a feel for gag writing.

The first step?

START LOOKING FOR THEM.

They are EVERYWHERE…

In your business…

In your home life…

In your underwear (YOUR underwear, don’t bother checking anyone else’s unless you fancy writing puns about “CELL”, “REGISTER” and “COURT APPOINTED ORDER”)…

Puns are EVERYWHERE.

Look for things, place, objects and haberdashery accessories that have at least two meanings and then play those meanings against each other in your mind, and see what images you create.

Don’t worry about creating fully-formed gags, just look for potential puns and start imagining how they would look in your mind.

If you fancy having a stab at writing one or two, go for it.

Read it out loud…

Get a feel for the tempo…

Does it sound right? Does it flow? If not, change it. Easy.

If you’re looking for an easy place to start writing, puns are the answer.

(I also uploaded a video of me talking about this to YouTube if you’re desperately bored)
